Phillies' Utley has utterly no Hollywood ego

You can take the kid out of L.A., but you can’t take L.A. out of the kid. Unless, that is, the kid is Chase Utley, who no sooner would brag about himself than play second base naked.

Utley is a metronome, a three-time All-Star and the most popular player on the Philadelphia Phillies, by far. In a town that eats its stars, he is beloved.

He left L.A. without the Hollywood ego. He never had one. He shows up early every day, works hard, plays hard and deflects attention onto others. He would rather not talk at all, thank you very much, and he says nothing even remotely controversial.

We tried. This is as close as we could get: There is no hamburger in Philadelphia quite as good as the one he loves in L.A.

“There’s no In-N-Out,” Utley said. “I do miss that. I get my fair share when we get out to the West Coast.

“Here they have their cheese steaks. You can only eat so many of them.”

The kid was born to play second base for the Dodgers. He grew up at Dodger Stadium, cheering for Orel Hershiser as he pitched a shutout in the last World Series game played there, in 1988. Utley was 9.

He played Little League in Long Beach, where his manager was Jeff Burroughs, the 1974 American League Most Valuable Player.

He played high school ball at Long Beach Poly, the alma mater of Tony Gwynn, teammates with Milton Bradley.

The Dodgers took Utley in the second round in 1997. He said no to the Dodgers, yes to UCLA.

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH CHASE CAMERON UTLEY!! like you have no idea i always say mom , what did chase utley do in the game last night(if i fall asleep haha) and i don’t care what anyone else does but you.and you only.<3 i would absolutely positivly die to meet you.i look up to you so much/your definetly my idol and your soo hott chase , like you can’t not like you if your a girl anyway and like baseball/softball.and if you can believe it bill giles’ son , who i call mr. giles his two oldest children (caroline and dana giles) play on my softball team!! so i am like begging them to take me to meet you and i am 12 years old by the way. and caroline(the oldest) said she already got to meet you though/ shake your hand and stuff and i would kill to do that so badly and if you get this message soon i am going to the milwaukee brewers game on saturday to see you play / my wholee family is going ..me (12) my brother(13) my sister (17) and my parents and we all play softball/baseball too so u can tell we are big fans of you/ the phillies and we are going as early as we can to hopefully meet you/get your autograph and other’s autographs and i will bring my chase utley jersey so you can sign it.lol.soo i will see you on saturday!! and i hope you have a good game.

keep up the good work on and off the field. my family and i are all phillies fans .we watch or listen to all the games we can.
