Chase Utley’s hitting has been well documented. He’s the best offensive second baseman in baseball.
However, Utley’s offense shouldn’t overshadow his defense.
In a recent study published by The Fielding Bible, Utley led all National League second basemen with a plus-8 rating. A plus number in the plus/minus system indicates the number of additional plays made by the fielder compared to an average defender at his position.
Utley is the early leader in a field that includes Rawlings Gold Glove winner Orlando Hudson of the D-backs, the Reds’ Brandon Phillips and the Mets’ Luis Castillo. Perhaps Utley is challenging Cardiinals first baseman Albert Pujols as the best hitter in baseball and best fielder at his position.
