Utley Injures Thumb in Phillies' 7-3 Loss to Reds

It was one of those aggressive base-running plays that Chase Utley makes all the time.

He drove a clean single to left-center, sprinted around first base and tried to turn it into a double.

Utley’s attempt to get something going for the Phillies’ offense in the top of the fourth inning Monday night backfired – in more ways than one.

In addition to being called out diving into second base, Utley suffered a right thumb injury that did not become evident until he had to be pinch-hit for in the ninth inning of the Phils’ 7-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

“It looked like his hand was hurting,” teammate Ryan Howard said. “He was having trouble gripping the bat.”

“For Chase to leave the game – that says something,” teammate Shane Victorino added. “He’s the last guy to take himself out. He’s obviously hurting.”

Team officials said Utley would have an MRI in Cincinnati on Tuesday. Utley was in the athletic trainer’s room receiving treatment after the game. A club official said he would not be available for comment until Tuesday.
