Utley aims for fifth straight All-Star start

Chase Utley is looking this year to become the first Phillies player in franchise history to start five consecutive All-Star Games.

Mike Schmidt had been elected to start six straight All-Star Games from 1979-84, but he could not start in 1980 because of an injury. Utley and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter are the only two players in Major League Baseball to start the past four All-Star Games at their respective positions in their respective leagues.

Placido Polanco, who is back with the Phillies after being traded to the Tigers in 2005, pointed to the star second baseman’s consistency.

“He’s the same type of guy,” Polanco said when asked if there were andy differences between Utley in 2005 and ’10. “He’s played more. He has a better idea of what pitchers are trying to do to him. He’s a very smart player. The talent is there. It’s always been there. He’s just probably a smarter player.”

The last National League player to start at least five consecutive All-Star Games was catcher Mike Piazza, who started in six straight from 1994-99. The last American League player was Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who started five straight from 2004-08.

Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times at MLB.com and all 30 club sites using the 2010 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until July 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
