When Chase Utley underwent surgery to repair his right hip on Nov. 25, the Phillies said the 30-year-old second baseman would need four to six months to recover.
Utley said Wednesday he could make his spring debut in two weeks, about a week before the prescribed four months.
“I’ve been down here for a month now and I’m working on a good progression,” Utley said before the Phillies’ 9-2 exhibition win over Team Canada. “We’re not putting an exact timetable on it but I think in two weeks I’ll be ready to go.”
Utley has been taking ground balls, turning double plays and taking live batting practice, but said he does not want to return too soon to the lineup and run the risk of reaggravating his hip.
“That would be the worst thing I could do,” he said.
Utley said he’s seen a dramatic improvement in his mobility since having the surgery, during which he had parts of his right femur shaved down.
“There’s definitely a difference,” he said. “(Last season) there was more lack of mobility than pain. The pain would come and go. Now it’s free. I can still feel it in uncomfortable positions but it’s getting better and better every day.”
The Phillies’ infield coaches have been working with Utley on creating another double play pivot this season in hopes of protecting him better from hard-sliding opponents.
