Phillies second baseman Chase Utley wasn’t in a mood to look back, especially because the view wasn’t so good.
Utley began his second postseason in a much better fashion than his first. He hit a two-out, two-run double yesterday to start the scoring in the third inning of the Phillies’ 3-1 win over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of their division series.
Utley went 1 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. He also made two stellar defensive plays, along with an error.
Still, it was a Hall of Fame performance compared to Utley’s first career playoff game last year, when the Phils suffered a 4-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
In that game, Utley went 0 for 4 and struck out four times. It was only the second time in his career that he had struck out in four at-bats.
The Phillies were swept in three games. Utley went 2 for 11 in the series with no extra-base hits and no RBIs. So it’s easy to see why he wasn’t into revisiting history.
“It’s been a while since last year, a whole year,” the 29-year-old Utley said.
“Last year is over with and this is a new team, new faces, and there is not really much to say about that but we have a determined team that wants to win and is willing to put in the time to win, and I’m excited.”
He was just as excited to change the topic and talk about starting this series on a winning note.
“It’s special, but obviously it is only one win,” Utley said. “We have to take some positives of today and create some momentum for tomorrow.”
