Werth, Utley help Phillies win last series vs. AL

Asking a baseball player to root out the underlying causes for the various idiosyncracies of a season is often like asking an ocean wave to explain why it rises and falls and, eventually, crashes onto the beach. Somewhere, there is a reason, the explanation of which is better left to folks who don’t have to concern themselves with the actual task at hand.

And so it was with a shrug that Jayson Werth answered a question regarding his remarkable production against his old Blue Jays team, which yesterday helped propel the Phillies to their second straight win over Toronto, this time 5-4 in come-from-behind fashion.

“I don’t have an answer for that,” said Werth, who reached base in five plate appearances yesterday,...

Utley Overtakes Pujols for Overall Lead in NL Balloting

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, the most popular National League player in balloting for the 2008 Midsummer Classic, has jumped to the top spot for the first time in this year’s race, overtaking first baseman Albert Pujols of the host St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth balloting update for the 2009 All-Star Game, to be played Tuesday, July 14th at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Pujols (.324, 22 HR, 57 RBI) and Utley (.305, 15 HR, 43 RBI) ranked first and second, respectively, in the first three weeks of N.L. balloting. Utley, who drew an N.L.-best 3,889,602 votes in 2008 as he earned the starting nod for a third straight season, has now taken first place among all N.L. players…

Utley leads Phillies over Mets

The difference between 33 wins and 34, and a one-game lead and a three-game lead, and a heartbreaking win and a heartbreaking loss, was so narrow last night that pinpointing the exact moment in which the Phillies’ fortunes turned is better left to the mathematicians.

The inning-ending doubleplay turned by Pedro Feliz and Chase Utley with the bases loaded in the fourth; the inning-ending strikeout by Scott Eyre with the bases loaded in the seventh; the inning-ending diving catch by Jayson Werth with the game-winning run racing around second in the 10th – on a night the Mets managed 16 hits and had 19 at-bats with runners in scoring position – all played equally decisive roles in determining the outcome.

But the…

Chase holds strong lead in all-star balloting

When Charlie Manuel fills out his National League lineup card for the All-Star Game next month, he might have more than one familiar name to write down.

His NL East-leading Phillies are starting to pile up some votes.

While second baseman Chase Utley already was off to the early lead at his position, newcomer Raul Ibanez has made a move into a potential starting slot in the outfield and mainstay Jimmy Rollins is gaining, moving up to second place at shortstop behind Florida’s Hanley Ramirez in the latest voting results released Monday.

And if Albert Pujols wasn’t running away with the overall vote the way he is, Ryan Howard might be in consideration at first base — but he’s only in third,...
